When You Can’t Change the People Around You

jumping of a cliff at sunsetEveryday I talk to people who are caught in the mainstream. You know the feeling: you try to live outside the box; do the right things for your family; work at something you love.

But the lemmings want you to go over the cliff with them. They don’t seem to care if it’ll hurt or kill them; they’re just following the crowd.

I heard some great advice the other day.

“When you can’t change the people around you, change the people around you.”

Are you willing to give up friends? If they don’t support you, they’re not really friends.

Great advice! Similar to “you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” philosophy. I’ve given up several friends over the years and I don’t think it’s really bothered either party to be honest. People don’t think about us as much as we think they do.
