Dave Munson started a company called Saddleback Leather which has since allowed him to impact people all around the world.  In 1999 he was living near Mexico and couldn’t find a bag for his books.  He found a guy to make bags for him, so he purchased eight, hung them off the rack of his land cruiser and sold them on the street while hanging out with his dog, Blue.

Instead of sitting around a campfire as a Youth Pastor, Dave decided he could do more good in the world by building a profitable business.

Dave moved to Mexico to make more bags.  He had no money so he spent about $100 / month on his apartment.   Sometimes he didn’t have hot water and slept on a mattress on the floor.

Dave Munson

Dave’s mission is always to give.  “It’s abnormal not to give.”

Dave’s a good storyteller.  He didn’t know his stories were anything special until he realized many people didn’t have an interesting story.  He’s infused his stories into the Saddleback website.  Does it seem unusual to have a major tab devoted to a dog?  Check it out; I guarantee you become engrossed in the story.

Mythbusters called Dave recently to see if they could get a bag to blow up.  He talks about the story on the show.  In conjunction with that, Dave’s giving away a bag to three people who destroy theirs, and a $1,000 gift certificate to the best video.  Be sure to read these instructions before blowing up your bag.

093 Coach Radio – Sent Around the Country by Twitter Followers [Your Story]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Covered in today’s show:

  • Alex and Luke are visiting all 50 states and every province in Canada
  • How social media played a huge role in their travels
  • They’re traveling to 50 states, 10 provinces, 3 territories, and nearly complete with them all.

Alex and Luke set out to see the United States and Canada and they put their travel plans in the hands of their community.

Alex’s house burned down and she lost everything about two years ago.  Insurance sent her a check and she decided not to buy new stuff.  Instead, she decided to travel.  One text to Luke sealed the deal for a travel buddy.

Luke was working for IBM at the time but had the travel bug.

Their community tells them where to go.  Their twitter followers tell them where to go, where to eat, what to do, and where to stay.  They’ve even stopped along the way and waited for directions from their followers before going to the next place.

Alex and LukeAlex and Luke started on March 20, 2010 and they’ve been everywhere in Canada and 48 states in the U.S.  They’re only missing Vermont and Hawaii.  They’ll complete Vermont this month as they travel through on the way back to New Hampshire.

Tourism boards tend to promote their travels when they see they’re coming through.  People are really proud of where they live and they want Alex and Luke to see it.  It’s a big part of growing their community.

Some people think it’s irresponsible to spend money traveling and not having a job.  I think it’s irresponsible to do something you’re not passionate about for the better part of your life.

It took them 5-6 months to get everything together before they hit the road.

They had little experience in we design or video work, but they plowed ahead anyway and learned along the way.

They had no video experience before this trip.

Together, Alex and Lukas have put over 70,000 kilometers or about 43,000 miles on Alex’s car.

Cool experiences: the people they’ve met, the sand dunes in Colorado, Glacier Bay.

Next steps: going back to New Hampshire where they’re staying for a few months.

“We’re not any different than you.” – Luke

Christopher Browning (@careerpirate) joins me to talk about his journey to help men become better in their lives and in their work.

Christopher is the COO at the Free Agent Academy and a Career Coach, living in St. Louis, MO. He’s been all over the place, both in travels and in careers.

I mentioned a book I’m reading, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.

We had a good discussion on failure and why it doesn’t bother Christopher. There is a difference between short-term failure and long-term failure.

“Your pain will bring you your best moments.”
