Dustin has a question about what my typical day looks like. How do I balance my time working with current clients vs. finding new ones. (more…)

Stop Double Spacing

typewriterAs it turns out, I’ve been using my thumbs too much. It’s likely you were raised as I was; taught to put two spaces between sentences. That dot at the end of a sentence is normally called a period, but its real name is a “full stop”.

Initially, typewriters used a font where each letter took up the same space. The letter “i” took just as much space as the letter “m”. Two spaces were added at the end of a sentence to help the reader better detect that full stop.

As it turns out, computers solved all of that. Unless you’re using a monospaced font like courier (you must have some real problems) the reader can very easily distinguish a single space.

In fact, most books (including mine) have only one space, as do magazines and newspapers. Imagine my surprise to learn this for the first time this week.

Lately I’ve had a much better response and open rate to emails.  I share why and what you can be doing with your newsletter to achieve the same.

I was approached with a question from someone whose wife thinks he’s wasting time on twitter when he’s supposed to be building a business.  That’s a tough one to tackle, but I have an answer.

How to Know When to Outsource

outsourceMy friend Bill Davis gave me this formula as a guide to know when to outsource instead of doing something yourself.  Outsourcing can be helpful, but can also be hard to jump in to for the first time.

I’ve included numbers as an example and to help you dream.  You can take it a step further and make up your own.  Remember to run numbers for the future (what you want to happen) rather than just based on today’s numbers.

Yield per hour
Target income ($100,000)

Number of weeks worked per year (45)
Number of hours worked per week (35)

= 1,575 hours per year

$100,000 / 1,575 = $63.49/hour

That’s the number you need to earn to life the lifestyle you want. If you can pay less per hour for a task (personal or business) and it can be outsourced, an argument can be made that it should be outsourced.

When you first outsource, it’s easiest and usually best to have that person do something you’re not good at and grow from there.

There are some cases where I wouldn’t outsource though, even when the numbers make sense.  Sometimes people want and need to deal directly with you.  Other times, the quality would severly suffer.  This formula should get you thinking though.

Check out Cliff’s virtual assistant podcast if you want to dive deeper.

I suggest crafting a list right now of 20 things you could outsource.  What are your top three?

When You Don’t Have Time [Trail Talk]

I didn’t quite make it to the trail like I wanted to, today. It was a busy day for me and I wanted to wrap some stuff up before a two week road trip. Here’s my solution to still get outside and think.

Ignore Your Business

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is leave it. Don’t try that with your spouse, by the way. Set your business up so it will run itself in your absence, and then get away so you can think. I guarantee you’ll be rockin’ it with ideas when you come back.

Are you unplugging over the holidays?
