Joel Boggess joins me from Dallas, TX and is one of the nation’s premier career coaches.  Dan Miller, author of 48 Days to the Work You Love, often refers people to work with Joel.  We’ve been friends since the Free Agent Academy (I’m not a paid leader there) kicked off in 2006 and we started as members together.

An underlying theme in Joel’s life has always been helping people in one way or another.

Joel’s new book is One Woman’s Journey to the Work She Loves.  It’s a story about one of Joel’s clients who overcame fears and challenges to find the work she loves.

Joel advises to start locally to establish credibility and find clients.  He’s now the go-to guy for career info in his area and is quickly expanding beyond his city.

Listen as Joel shares a heart felt story on why he does what he does.

“My niche found me.” Joel found this after being in business for four years.  He says get started and take the first step, even if you don’t know your niche in business.

Be Wild at Heart

I just finished reading the updated version of Wild at Heart. The publisher, Thomas Nelson, was kind enough to send me a free copy.

I read Wild at Heart for the first time about five years ago.  John Eldredge is the author and has updated and expanded on the first edition.

What I like about the book is the message for men to get back to their roots and to live how they were created to live.  Without fear and with a sense of wildness. I think this is good advice in business too.

John quotes Howard Thurman in the book and it’s one of my favorites:

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs.  Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Isn’t that the truth?  We don’t need another person to start a fast food restaurant just to make money.  What we need is someone to find their passion and excitement in life and do that every day.  Be careful guys, reading this book could change your life.

The photo is Kevin Miller’s son Caleb.  We walked near Pike’s Peak, CO a few weeks ago together.

Kevin Metger started this blog after giving up on business (he’s tried quite a few).  He has three kids and is very passionate about fatherhood and parenting.  He’s sharing his story and passions through his blog.

Kevin is trying to get 1,000 dads to complete a survey at thedadvocateproject.com.  He’s then interviewing a group of them and turning their stories into a book.

Biggest challenge so far: implementation.

How he’s getting the word out: online media (facebook, twitter, linkedin), getting involved in as many communities as possible.  That’s lead to 3,000 – 5,000 website views per month for him.  Social Media is Kevin’s#1 tool.

What we can learn from Kevin: persistence and attitude.

My guest is Andy Traub as we drive through the icy mountain roads of Colorado on our way to a Free Agent Academy event. We discuss monetizing something you enjoy doing and give the example of my brother who is pursuing his passion of outdoor sports and snow skiing.

We also give some insight into how we’re making money while being out of town, away from our offices.

Andy also gives some great insight on why he hired me as a coach and why he continues to pay to work with me.  (Full disclosure – Andy has been a client for over a year.)

No matter the source of your passion, take the time to define the what.  Here’s a great article that provides some more insight of monetizing your passion.

Andy mentioned the website he’s building that feeds into his passion of helping business owners improve their profits through technology.
