Sound Deadening for Podcasting: Do You Need It?

To address a few recent questions about sound deadening, I created this video to talk about what I use. I talk about the difference between dynamic and condensor microphones.

The camera has a dynamic microphone by the way. You’ll hear a bit of a room echo in the video, but much less since I’m using some sound deadening panel.

Are you a podcaster? What are you using for sound deadening when you record?

I must stay, Justin, that your sound quality is excellent and I know you have worked hard to get it that way.  I have listened to over 170 episodes and the difference between your quality and the quality of other podcasts is obvious.  I am personally using a noise canceling headset (Andrea NC-91) to do some narration on weekly videos for a series I call Can You Etch It where I laser engrave different objects (including M&M’s).  My voice sounds flat and not that great but I am getting started.  I like the noise dampening panels you put up but I must say, you could have picked something more colorful.  I like the 4 paintings you have in the shot behind you.  Is it possible to do some painting on the sound panels without decreasing their effectiveness?

Thanks, Alan. The color was very intentional actually. It’s a great match to the blue in my logo. I could paint them but I’m not artistic at all.
