Is Information Worth Paying For?

informationThe internet is free. Well, as long as you take the cost of connecting to it and your computer out of the equation. For that matter, you can even go to the library. So essentially, the internet is free.

What you find on the internet is amazing. Entire college classes are online at no charge. Instructions to make wedding cakes, complete with video, and details on tiling a kitchen floor; all there for free.

If there’s so much there for free, is it really worth paying for? I’m curious to know your thoughts.

Everything on Coach Radio is free. You’ll spend $7 per month if you want a bit more inspiration, motivation, and ideas to grow your blog at Need a Topic. A bunch of people have told me over the past week it’s well worth paying for. They’re not just saying that either, they’re actually there paying for it.

So what’s the difference? I get most of my stuff free online, but there are still things I pay for.

What do you pay for and what do you get free online?

I am willing to pay for certain information because I know the source it comes from. For instance, there are tons of job hunting/career sites out there. I have paid for Dan Miller’s materials on several occasions because I know the author’s work and trust his voice. The information I need is packaged and ready. I don’t have to filter it for bogus content. It is all solid. Some of it may not apply to me, but that does not mean it doesn’t have merit. There are things I willing grab for free, but I will gladly pay for content I need that is put together well.

Information is free. Applied knowledge to solve a specific problem? That’s rare.

The Web is full of half baked articles brimming with information but devoid of substance, analysis, or application. That’s one reason I listen to CoachRadio consistently; you apply your knowledge to solve your listeners’ problems in such a way that I can apply the solutions to problems in my own life and work.

Great point. It’s getting past that free information and figuring out how to use it.

The filters are important and helpful. They help you get the most from the free information. People like Dan Miller and Zig Ziglar do a lot of packaging together free content and boiling it down to the most helpful stuff.

It is worth paying for. It usually comes down to time. I could spend a ton of time finding the right info or wading through the free stuff to get exactly what I need. In that case I will pay for it and make it faster to reach my goal.

    How can I help?

Me, too, Josh. If I can get to the front of the line and the price isn’t
    outrageous, I’m in.
