How Would You Use a MeTag?

Alan sent me some really cool MeTags and wants to know how people will use them. Leave your ideas in the comments. If Alan like what you come up with, he’ll make you some custom tags for free.

Remember to leave your ideas on how you would use your own custom tags (in the comments). If Alan like your ideas he’ll send you some of your own custom tags.

  • Scott Morrison

A few ideas that came to mind are key chain, luggage tag, kids back for school (depending on the tag, good advertising, or selling point for the tags themselves), necklace, gift tag for custom/homemade items.

  • http://criticaltactics.blogspot.com/ Mitch Concannon

First thing came to mind, including a rubber banded outer layer. i had a pair of dog tags and hearing them crash of one another became very annoying. but they came with a thin black tight rubber band that goes around them and know i don’t pass any remarks. If anything he could include it as a option to customers.

High end custom instruments could use this.. beats the ol white tag with a price handwritten on it. For luggage maybe a larger tag..

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Travis, good ideas.  I agree that for luggage, a bigger tag would be better.  Thanks for the comment

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Mitch, the rubber banded outer layer is a good idea (I have heard them referred to as silencers).  I have had a MeTag on my laptop bag for months now and since there is only one of them (not a pair that is typical in dog tags) there is little to hit and make noise, depending on what they are on.  Having the silencers as options is a good idea.  Thanks

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Scott, good idea.  I have not thought of gift tags angle.  I have seen similar items as key chains and some preprinted tags as necklaces.  Thanks for the suggestions and ideas

  • http://criticaltactics.blogspot.com/ Mitch Concannon

Your very welcome Alan. All the best.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Thanks for all the comments so far.  I will cut off the give away and go through the comments next Monday, 2/20/12, at 7:00a CST.  If your comment is among the best, I will contact you for the details for your own MeTag.  Keep those comments coming

They’d be cool to use as business cards, Alan. Especially for you. I have a friend who does leather repair and his biz cards are full size, stamped out of leather.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great idea Justin.  A MeTag as a business card would definitely be different and memorable.

  • Nikki Ortiz

Great gift tags to hang on a baby gift to later be used as identification for a diaper bag in a nursery.

Or how about for tagging children at festivals or places like Disney.  We usually write names and numbers on the kids’ arms, and if (or when… lol) they get lost, they know to go to a uniformed employee and show them their arm (so my shy children don’t really have to speak).  I’d use one of these tags instead of the Sharpie on the arm.

I’ve got one more!  As a Thirty One consultant (seller of all things purse-like), this would make a great Hostess Gift.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great idea for diaper bags and Disney.  We are staying away from Disney until the kids are a little older but a MeTag would be great then.

I have heard of Thirty One but did not know much about it.  I think a MeTag would be great for that.

Tell Carlos and the kids Hi from us.

  • http://www.jmlalonde.com Joe Lalonde

I thought of business cards too Justin!

  • http://www.jmlalonde.com Joe Lalonde

Justin took my idea of a business card.

Another idea would be as a signature card for geocaching. People used to leave business sized cards with their geocacher name and some information. Those seem to have fallen out of style but I think the MeTag could reinvigorate this trend.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great idea Joe.  Since the MeTags are laser engraved on anodized aluminum, they are durable and small.  I am a little familiar with geocaching.  Is that something you do Joe, or just something you are familiar with?  Different colors could represent different cache types.  The wheels are turning…

  • http://www.jmlalonde.com Joe Lalonde

Alan, thanks! Yes, I geocache quite often. It’s been a fun hobby and something I could see these being used for.

It could be neat having one for multi-caches, single stage caches, where-i-gos, etc… Or different colors for how you felt about the cache. One for It’s Awesome!, Good cache, or This cache stunk.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

All great ideas Joe.  I would like to learn more about geocaching.  Can you suggest any sites to get me started?  What is the best geocaching blog out there?

Also, is there an iPhone app for geocaching?  I don’t have an iPhone, but I thought it would be useful since they can access GPS coordinates and an app could be created to catalog the caches in certain areas.

Thanks for all the input.  I’m anxious to get started working on some of these ideas

If you could etch QR or bar codes on them, I think I’d have the website url / graphic on one side, and then a QR/barcode on the other side that would send the person to a video and/or url that would have a special offer. This offer could be either a percentage off an order, or just a standing X dollars off your purchases, as a type of reward/member card. Then people could give them away to friends and family members or leave them out somewhere and even share them. I’d personally probably use them to create a list or something so that they are more of a sales tool with discounts. I’d probably do a limited number or do the “membership” thing. You could go a lot of different directions, but I’d simply treat it like a key fob that lets you in an electronic lock, only my door is a website deal or message.
I imagine these would all be printed and be the same, but if they could be customized, it would be interesting to do some tracking on them, or offer a bonus to a random person. You know, like those grocery store barcode things?

  • Nikki Ortiz

Had another thought… A zipper pull for kids’ coats.  The kids will think it’s cool and the jacket can be identified.

Carlos says “Hi” back.  Hope you are all well.  We miss AL!

  • Nikki Ortiz

There is an app for that.  I have it on my phone!

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Dustin, I like your ideas about the QR barcodes.  I did some research a year ago about them and was impressed.  I don’t have a smart phone so the applications to me are very limited but I like your idea of using a MeTag as a reward/member card.  Also, changing the QR for a random bonus is very clever.  Using them for tracking by encoding a Bit.ly or other shortening service is also interesting.  Maybe a good way to send visitors to a very targeted landing page, maybe specifically designed for that business or customer group.  Thanks

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Zipper pulls for kid’s coats is a great idea.  They may be too big, but I think I can wrangle a MiniMeTag for that.  Stay tuned

We are all doing fine.  I have some interesting pictures of Luke on top of our feed shed I will send you a link to.  Boys will be boys…

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

I figured as much; there is an iPhone app for everything.  Do you geocache Nikki?  Which app do you have?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CSCLEU5UAPPZHMXP76VTC3DP5I Danny M

Of course some of the standard ideas are obvious like luggage or backpack.  I think I would be looking to have one as a bookmark.  What I would do is have a QR code as well as my website on it.  This way when someone asked hey what are you reading, I could have them scan and be taken straight to my current reading list.  Of course, I could also pass them out with that info to.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great ideas Danny.  I think a MeTag would be a little thick for a bookmark, but I like the application of the QR to point to your current reading list.  What do you use to keep up with your reading list?  I use GoodReads.com.  Thanks for the comment

  • http://coachradio.tv/ Justin Lukasavige

QR code. Interesting. That’d be worth playing around with to see if it’ll work, Alan. Great idea, Danny.

  • http://roborr.net Rob Orr

That’s a really cool product idea. I’d really like to see a QR code on the other side of the logo with a link to a website or some other awesome valuable link. EDIT: Danny and I are thinking on the same wavelength!

I think these in conjunction with QR codes would be great id tags for conferences too. I could see them being used at something like SXSW with QR codes that link to their Twitter pages, etc. The QR could also be used to link to a virtual business card with all their pertinent contact information.

    I really like this idea!

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Thanks for the suggestions Rob.  I think using MeTags for conferences would be a great idea; they are small, durable, and unique.  Especially with the QR code linking to a Twitter profile, they can be extremely useful.

My goal is to make something that can be used in a variety of circumstances.  With conference tags, how often do you throw those away after you get back?  I have considered working with some workshop providers to design MeTags for their workshops and weekend classes.  Not only would that be a useful item for the participants, since it would be personalized, it would be useful after the event.

With all these comments about QR barcodes, I think I will have to whip something up tonight. Thanks

  • http://www.facebook.com/dfluke Dustin Fluke

Not too far off topic, but a friend of mine built readernaut.com
I use it for keeping tabs on my favorite “want to reads” and current reads.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Dustin, thanks for the site.  I tried to sign up but either the site of my computer is having a bad day.  I’ll try again later.  Thanks

  • http://rise365.com Michael Good

    Justin,
I’d give them for free to all my new students at http://soundboardmusicschool.com. I’ve thought about doing this with the popular rubber wristbands, but this is a really cool idea.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great idea Michael.  Specifically, what would you put on those MeTags for your students?  Would they use the MeTags to identify their music bags?  Thanks

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great bunch of comments so far.  Keep them coming.

Many of you ask about QR barcodes.  I decided to whip one up.  Here it is

    http://bookwormlaser.com/metag-qr.png

I don’t have a smartphone but from what I can tell, it works.  If some of you could check it, let me know how it goes and what you think about it.  Thanks

  • http://coachradio.tv/ Justin Lukasavige

Works great, Alan. I didn’t know you could get your logo in the middle. Sweet.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Thanks Justin.  I have been wanting to do a QR with a picture or logo for a long time.  Glad I had a little push from all the great comments

  • http://rise365.com Michael Good

Yeah, I think students could put it on their instrument cases or wear it around their neck. Maybe the business name on one side and something like “VIP Member” on the other. It’d be cool to have the website somewhere on there as well.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

I like the idea of a “VIP Member” MeTag.  I think it would make great conference badges and other similar applications.  They could even have barcodes (QR or normal) so the wearer could sign in.  With the MeTags being two sided, there is a lot of information you can put on them.  Thanks for the ideas Michael

  • Kevin Reeves

I would Use them as ID tags for my kids sports bags.

  • http://bluecapra.com/ Alan Reeves

Great idea Kevin.  I think they will do better than the luggage tag idea I had before.  Smaller and less obtrusive.  Thanks for the comment
