How to Find Job Security

SecurityIn this study by Simply Hired and mentioned in Inc., 33% of 2012 college graduates say their top priority when looking for a job is job security. In our current job market, I wonder if they’ll be able to find a job that offers any sort of security.

Governments are laying off employees by the thousands and declaring bankruptcy. The average length of a job in the US is about two years. Gone are the days of retiring with a gold watch and a nice pension. Yet the #1 thing grads are looking for is security.

“Security lies in our ability to produce.”
- Douglas MacArthur

Do we all need to start a business? Not necessarily. If our security is found in producing, then let’s produce. Would a company lay off its top sales person? Sure, it could happen, but it’s unlikely.

I hope these college grads know how to produce. Whether in sales, leadership, or operations. If you can get things done, you’ll find security.

I was a victim of job loss, while being rated a very high producer, because of merger and acquisition activity.  At some point, it’s all about numbers to a corporation – how well you produce is totally irrelevant.

So I would say having a business, perhaps in addition to a day job, is good insurance.

I hear you, Scott. Especially in big business, knowing the right people becomes somewhat irrelevant. I’m trying to replace some income right now from a contract that ended early. It’s not been easy, but I’m also not faced with having to replace an entire job.
