How Not to Get Fired!

get firedWhile Self magazine had good intentions, I want to approach this headline a bit differently. The premise of their article is what to do if you screw up. I want to talk about intentionally doing things that could get you screwed.

It doesn’t matter if you’re working for yourself or someone else; if you’re the janitor or the CEO. You should be pushing the envelope and doing scary things. This isn’t Office Space where you work just hard enough not to get fired. If you’re doing that, you’re not alive. You’re not being who you are, and you’re letting a lot of people down.

I interviewed CEO Ryan Blair a while back and asked him if he ever pushed the envelope enough to worry about being fired by his board. He told me his directors actually had a plan to let him go at one point until he talked them out of it. That’s the difference between you and a guy who took a company from $600,000 per month to $10,000,000 per month in just two years.

Are you pushing things enough to worry about getting fired? Or are you just working hard enough to avoid getting fired?

Great advice.  I just finished the interview with Ryan Blair and was inspired.  I plan to read his book very soon.  I think we should all be doing great work and like you said, pushing the envelope.  Looking back on you life, would you rather see a dull life with nothing accomplished or would you rather see a rocky road full of accomplishments and failures.

I think I’ll go the rocky path.

Justin, this is so very true. I personally need to push the envelope at work. I’ve become indifferent, layoffs and hard times will do that. Yes, I still have a job, thankfully. But I need to stretch the limits, come out of hiding, and shake things up.

Let’s remind each other that we need to be doing this, Spencer.
