Jon Dale joins me today.  Jon helps big brands with their social media presence but he only has two (and a bit) people working for him.

We talk about how there is no magical way to find success, but rather figuring out what it is you’re passionate about and how you can help other people.

Jon’s background is in advertising and marketing.  He sold a lot of local products over the years but figured out business was changing about four or five years ago.

One of Jon’s first big consulting clients got Jon for free. He talks about a lot of sacrifices he made to get to where he is now.

Generosity is a major player in this interview.  Jon and I talk about the importance of giving in our lives and businesses.

I ask Jon if it was as easy as he makes it sound. He said…”NO!”.  They were broke much of the time and sunk a big investment of time into getting his business off the ground.

The last question I ask Jon, is if he ever thought of giving up.  Check it out if you need some motivation.

Social media is the new real estate. – Jon Dale

Jennifer DiDinatoJenny DiDonato is 26 years old and a personal trainer at Made Fit TV.  She’s had a career in TV new as a reporter and anchor.  She was a bit fed up reporting on what other people wanted her to report on she started her own thing.

She became a personal trainer and started working at a gym in Detroit, MI.  She started catering to brides and worked with them in their homes.  She started podcasting on her website and had a lot of questions from people who weren’t brides.

Jenny branched out and started shooting videos and included them in her blog every week.  She’s been very consistent over the past two years.  I ask her how she stuck with it when she thought no one was watching.

Jenny averages about 3,000 – 5,000 views per video over a two month video.

Equipment is key for her business and she talks about setup/teardown for her videos.

Multiple streams of income – sponsorships, personal training, products, affiliate.

Future goals to expand sponsorships, create a DVD for sale, reach out more to the community.

Jenny handles everything that you see because she makes things a priority.

“You need to spend money and/or time in order to make things happen.” – Jennifer DiDinato

James Dibben is a Blue Collar Coach in Kasas City and hosts a podcast network to help contractors succeed in their businesses.  I met James at a Free Agent Academy event a while back, where I’m a leader.

James has been a cabinet installer for the past 11 years.  He’s been featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in Kansas City not once, but twice.

The Confident Business Model was put together as a result of our coaching together.  James led a class in Kansas City initially to help blue collar businesses get a hold of their success.

Debt has been a major player in the life of James. You can hear his story in episode #5.

James says he hired me because he wanted to be a coach, but didn’t know where to start.

“If you have ideas, you’re ready to start.  You don’t need to have it all figured out.” – James Dibben

Jonathan Pool is a coach and our Idea Professor at the Free Agent Academy.

This is from Jonathan’s About page:

An Adventurer, Traveler, Scout, and Guide.

A Thinker, Strategist, and Catalyst for Change.

An Idea Generator, Possibility Creator, and Problem Solver.

A Translator, Communicator, and Teacher.

I am a Relevant Difference Maker to the core!

I see unrealized potential and take action to draw it out.

I make a difference in everything I do.

Wow, that’s exactly where I’m trying to get to!

Jonathan studied mechanical engineering in school.  He worked for a firm before leaving to start his own.  He still wasn’t happy so he tried a number of things.

To figure out what he should be doing, Jonathan took a sabbatical from work.  He had someone guide him through the process to help him figure it out.  (Wow,yet another successful coach who hires coaches.)

In finding your ideas, Jonathan gives an analogy of putting a mosaic together.  You need to answer the question, “where have I been and where do I go now?”.  What are the significant events that have shaped you?

Jonathan talks about the steps you should take as you’re just starting to figure out what you should be doing.

Check out the Free Agent Academy if you’d like to hang out with Jonathan and me.

Jon Tollefson graduated with an engineering degree.  He went into engineering because he was told he could build and break things.  It’s the application of what he’s doing now that he doesn’t enjoy.  He’d rather be creating and building.

Jon’s passion is outdoor sports like wakeboarding and snowboarding.  We talk about the underlying purpose of bringing family into his business and making that a core reason for doing business.

He’s planning a Wakeboard Cable Park Tour 2011.

There’s a lot of ideas that Jon’s working on and trying to get pushed forward.  I ask him how he keeps sticking with things to try and make them happen.

Jeff Kosola and I connected on twitter a few months ago.  He’s delivering pizzas to deliver his way out debt.

deliverawaydebt.com

@deliverawaydebt on twitter

Started with $101,000 in debt and they’re half way to getting debt.  He and his family will be debt free in April, 2011.

Jeff works for GM now but doesn’t care for it.  In 2007, he took a promotion and moved to China for a 3-year contract.  He didn’t like the job so after about 13 months they moved back and he got back into his old job.

Deliver Away DebtThey tried for 11 months to get out of debt before hiring my friend Chad Pennycuff to help them get out of debt.

Jeff might get into coaching as he’s not in love with his job at GM.

His blog is inspirational and people have commented that’s it’s moved them towards action.

Biggest mistake – over-committing to posting and not following through.

Best thing he’s done – helping people get off their butts and move towards action with his blog and twitter.

This is a short break from our normal Your Story episodes where I unpack what Story means to me.

And…I share a very big announcement that’s been affecting my business and family for the past few weeks.

A few notes from the show:

Story includes setting, conflict, climax, and resolution.

Don’t you want to look back 20 years from now and say you had the courage to do something few other people ever would?

Alan Jackson is a success evangelist and action expert.   He has a degree in radio, television, and journalism and you’ll find him online at snapcoaching.com.

Alan’s all about taking action.  SNAP stands for Start Now Action Plan.

Alan says that staying on track is all about accountability.  You don’t need Yes Men at the core of your life.  You need people who will help hold you accountable.

A few years ago, a bad business decision put Alan and his family very near bankruptcy.  He had to reassess his goals and priorities so he could continue to make it work.

“No one is perfect.  We need to expect to fail and be ready to pick ourselves up when we do.” – Alan Jackson

“If you don’t take inventory of your life every so often, you’ll get off track.” – Alan Jackson
