Dallon Christensen is a Coach in Bettendorf, IA.

Dallon helps businesses become profitable by using their balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements to look forward and make decisions rather than looking backward.

Cash burn rate – how long your business can survive without making any sale.

Dallon didn’t have much success the first time he tried to launch his business and he explains how he turned it around.

He’s getting some great insight and coaching from the Free Agent Academy.

Dallon’s wife Stephanie is on board because he has a real working plan for his transition.  He’s not shooting in the dark and just hoping he’ll be profitable enough one day to do it full time.

Andy Traub came up for web design.

How he’s getting the word out – connecting with people and providing value: Free Agent Academy, facebook, blog, twitter, newsletter, working on two online training classes and a future podcast.

“When I’m doing something, I’m doing it all out.”

Eric had questions on teaching other people’s material, such as Dave Ramsey, Dan Miller and us.  I discuss how to do it without stealing and infringing on copyright material.  You should personally lead through material if you want to be positioned as an expert.

Eric’s question stemmed from listening to Coach Radio #12.

Email derek@lukascoaching.com if you’d like to make the Past Due: Money and Life Boot Camp your own material.  You’re free to do so.

Can you repackage material and make it your own?  Yes, it’s been said there aren’t many original thoughts out there.  But packaging and marketing are very powerful.

I also discussed two very important concepts if you want to be profitable.  You need to figure out how you’re both unique and remarkable.

Sample Forecast

$2,000 (target monthly revenue)

Average client = $500

Clients = 4

Conversion from prospect to client = 50%

Prospects = 8

You probably need about 10 people to request consultation that will show up to meet with you.

Marketing is the outcome.  Now you need to figure out what you’re going to do to find these 10 people.

Eric Sherer is a Financial Coach in Bethlehem, PA.

Eric shares his story about getting out of debt and using his experiences to help others do the same.

He currently works in air traffic control and is building his business on the side.

Eric’s advice – don’t coach people in their own homes, be yourself.

How to get the word out – speaking, newsletter.  Drip value into the lives of people and they’ll become clients six month later.

“Building a business is like raising a child.”

“Building a business is a marathon rather than a sprint.”

I was a little scared in this episode because there’s a lot of hype out there (mostly online) about making absurd amounts of money as a coach — or any business for that matter.

This isn’t a pie in the sky or head in the clouds sort of plan.  I take you step by step through the plan that I’ve used and help my clients achieve.  I also share with you why I don’t stick to this plan any more.  The answer may surprise you.

Chris wrote in with some great questions:

  1. Time management — how do I build my business when I have 2 young kids at home who drain my energy?
  2. What did I do to build my business when I spent all that time in hotel room?
  3. What are some tips/suggestions regarding working from home?
  4. How to develop an economic model like Jim Collins talks about in his book Good to Great?
  5. What would it take to work with me?

I need help. If you’d like to be featured in our studio, send me a signed book cover, CD, DVD, something you made, etc. and I’ll hang it on our wall. Thousands of people will see it each month. It must be tasteful and something I support. Here’s our address.

Mentions during the show:

Free Agent Academy – the place to be surrounded with people who care about helping you become self-employed. We’ll help you in your endeavor.

Rick Caron is The Chief Connector and has been a guest on Past Due: Radio.

Outstanding by John G. Miller

Choosing to Cheat by Andy Stanley

google voice – If I started out in business today, I’d sign up for this free service right away.

themarriagebed.com – Believe it or not, I used to jump into the financial section of the forum here and help people. It’s the same strategy I teach today in social media and it works. This website hasn’t been redesigned since I did that four years ago, but it’s a safe place.

google.com/analytics – Find out how many visitors you have and where they’re coming from.

Leroy pointed out this is a good option for an office, but you have to live in England.
