I just returned from Don Miller’s Storyline conference. Kevin Miller and I recorded this podcast for the Free Agent Underground. It has a lot of relevance for listeners to Coach Radio, so I’m releasing it here as well.

“If at the end of your life, you were with a room full of people
who watched a movie of your life, how would you feel if…as the final credits were rolling,
people looked at each other and said, ‘What was that all about?’”

That was a questioned posed by Donald Miller at his Storyline Conference in Portland two days ago. I was privileged to be there in the audience with my friends Dan, Kevin, and Jared Miller, and a few Free Agents.

Kevin and I recorded this podcast together from a park in downtown Portland, amidst a sea of eclectic people.

If you’re interested in the Free Agent Academy, check out the video I did from the trail.  Without a doubt, this group has been the best thing I’ve ever done for my business.

I just returned from Don Miller’s Storyline conference. Kevin Miller and I recorded a podcast from the streets of Portland and I’ll release that as a special in the next two days.  I’ll also be blogging about some of the things I’ve learned, so stay tuned.

CoachU is happening in a few weeks?  Will you join us to kick your coaching business into profitability?

Steve called in to ask a question on speaking. He wants to know how general or specific to be in topics.

Matt writes to say:

Thank you for all the wisdom you spread via your blog, podcast, and twitter. I am a recent follower of everything on CoachRadio.tv.

Before I get to the questions I would like to ask I have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed your tweets from the Outer Banks. Growing up as a kid we would go there every summer; Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, the Wright Brothers memorial. While I currently reside in Colorado, the Outer Banks, to this day, is my favorite place in the world. It was so exciting to hear about your travels on the island. Thank you for that trip down memory lane!

For years I have studied success literature in an effort to harvest the skills needed to own my own business and generally become the best person I can be. After digesting tons of material I found that there was one area where I needed more guidance; how do I apply this to my life?

Out of frustration I developed my own ideas and methods for achieving my goals and would like to share this with others. I am adept at making and sticking to plans and have a knack for simplifying concepts for others. To this end I have started a blog but I want to take this further and work with individuals or groups helping them succeed.

  • Is there a need out there for a practical, hands on coach to help people get through the logistics of making their dreams a reality?
  • Is my focus too broad by not concentrating on finance or career coaching?
  • Am I looking at life coaching but don’t know it?

I Don’t Live Here

I took a short break this week and flew to Portland, OR for an event and to catch up with some friends. I stayed in a non-chain hotel and was struck by something we could probably all do better in our businesses.

What Keeps You up at Night?

raccoon$90,000 in debt looming over my head used to keep me up at night.  Then I created a plan to crush it all.  Pay it back and owe nothing but a house payment.

My family used to keep me up at night.  I was an airline pilot, basically living in New York City where I was based, while my family was home in North Carolina.  I created a plan to take back my schedule by starting my own business.  Now I’m in charge and 100% in control.

Now I can’t sleep because I’m excited to go to work nearly every day.  We all have things that keep us up at night.  Jerrid is coming to my office for coachU and wrote to tell me this:

“Going to NC is the first step for me in starting a business where I can execute my passions and help people.  I enjoy my current career, but have always felt something missing.  Having a business where I’m in control of my destiny, have an open-ended income, act upon my passions, and help people…this keeps me up at night.

My wife and I became debt-free in December of 2007.  The life we’ve been able to live since then is so foreign to today’s norm.   Recently, we bought our first home and put 40% down after just 2 1/2 years of saving and hope to have it completely paid off in 4 to 6 years.

I’ve had many opportunities to chat with co-workers, neighbors, friends, and family about paying off debt and budgeting…I find myself being way more passionate about these topics than my current job.  To me, going to NC, getting coached myself on the nuts-and-bots of starting a coaching business is not only a no-brainer, it’s something I HAVE to do.”

CoachU is a event where  you’ll go behind the scenes in my business to learn what worked and how you can replicate the same success we’ve had at Lukas Coaching.  If you want to spend time with my team and only four other coaches to build the business of your dreams, you’ll want to join us.

At the time of this writing only three spots remain.  Visit the registration page to see if space is still available.

Jennifer DiDinatoJenny DiDonato is 26 years old and a personal trainer at Made Fit TV.  She’s had a career in TV new as a reporter and anchor.  She was a bit fed up reporting on what other people wanted her to report on she started her own thing.

She became a personal trainer and started working at a gym in Detroit, MI.  She started catering to brides and worked with them in their homes.  She started podcasting on her website and had a lot of questions from people who weren’t brides.

Jenny branched out and started shooting videos and included them in her blog every week.  She’s been very consistent over the past two years.  I ask her how she stuck with it when she thought no one was watching.

Jenny averages about 3,000 – 5,000 views per video over a two month video.

Equipment is key for her business and she talks about setup/teardown for her videos.

Multiple streams of income – sponsorships, personal training, products, affiliate.

Future goals to expand sponsorships, create a DVD for sale, reach out more to the community.

Jenny handles everything that you see because she makes things a priority.

“You need to spend money and/or time in order to make things happen.” – Jennifer DiDinato

Blow the Big Guys Out of the Water

There are some easy things I do to blow the big guys out of the water when it comes to connecting with people and converting relationships into sales.

Building Buzz

Savory Spice ShopI get really excited when a business I’m working with gets to launch.  There’s excitement and a bit of fear that surrounds an event like this.

Will people show up for a grand opening (retail)?

Will they buy what I’m selling?

Will they like it and want more?

Will they tell their friends?

All these questions hang in the air but none of them can diminish the hopes and hard work a new business owner has invested in their business.

This picture is of two big samples of spices from Bob and Cindy Jones.  I’ve been working with them over the past few months to get their new shop, Savory Spice, open and profitable, in Raleigh, NC.

Instead of a big radio and TV blitz, they’re doing a big grass roots campaign and getting out to where the people are.  They’re not hoping for people to see their ads, but instead, are out there interacting directly with their future customers.  They’re people, not a faceless company with a fancy spot on the radio.

That’s what grass roots is all about.  Being real.

Not only is their campaign less expensive, but it’s far more effective.  They’ll meet people in their neighborhood and get to know them by name.  They’ll be able connect with them again when they come back for another spice.  After tasting this sample, there’s no doubt they’ll be back.

If you want to squash doubts about the success of your business, get out there and do what it takes to be real. Stop hiding behind ineffective advertising and do the hard work of connecting one-on-one.

I’m doing coaching on the air in this episode with Don Current.  His biggest issue is finding prospects to interact with.

Don is a Financial Coach and has a great looking website.  He trained with Dave Ramsey last year and is trying to grow his business.

Biggest need is to get in front of more people.  I’m sure a lot of people can identify with that.

I covered some of the things I mentioned in my post, I Need Clients, NOW!

Don is a member at the Free Agent Academy.  I lead a few groups there with the intention of helping people pursue self-employment.  Come over and check if out.

If you and your business would benefit from a results driven coach, email me (justin@lukascoaching.com) and let’s set up 30 minutes to talk.  I work with clients around the world and would love to learn about what you’re doing to help other.
