Business Insights from the Mountain

I was in the mountains of Colorado for a few days with a group of aspiring Free Agents and Christopher Browning and I were able to escape for a few hours. Here’s what we learned from a few hours in the mountains.

Jon Tollefson graduated with an engineering degree.  He went into engineering because he was told he could build and break things.  It’s the application of what he’s doing now that he doesn’t enjoy.  He’d rather be creating and building.

Jon’s passion is outdoor sports like wakeboarding and snowboarding.  We talk about the underlying purpose of bringing family into his business and making that a core reason for doing business.

He’s planning a Wakeboard Cable Park Tour 2011.

There’s a lot of ideas that Jon’s working on and trying to get pushed forward.  I ask him how he keeps sticking with things to try and make them happen.

Rule Your City

worldI’m surrounded by people starting businesses every day and the excitement is contagious.  You can sense the thoughts about world domination rattling around in people’s minds sometimes.

What’s not to be excited about?

When you start a business you have complete control over your life by setting your own hours and schedule.  You get to travel whenever and wherever you like, and people all around the world will know your name.

Launch Time

You launch your business and something unexpected happens.  The newly minted business owner has to figure out how to bridge the gap between his town of 100,000 people and the rest of the world.  A remote business is about being connected and known everywhere, right?

Become a Local Expert

When you start a business you can jump directly in and get your name everywhere, but it’s usually not the most effective strategy.  What if you could grab some low-hanging fruit and be profitable quickly, instead of doing a lot of work for little return.  The answer is to become a local expert before expanding into bigger areas.

But that’s no fun, right? Big businesses aren’t born in places like Sioux Falls, SD (population 157,000), Cedar Rapids, IA (population 128,000), or Warren, MI (population 133,000) after all.

The truth is that they really are.  You don’t need everyone in the world to know you when you’re starting out.  What you need to be is the best in the world at what you do; and by “world” I mean your world.  It’s your center of influence; the people who know and care about you.

Build Your Influence

You can build your influence locally by focusing on three very specific things.

  1. Website
Create a professional website that’s updated frequently, meaning more than once per week.  Install a blog and talk about things that you care about and are helpful to others.
  2. Speak
Hit up every group that will listen.  Nothing says “expert” like someone on a stage.  Back it up with real knowledge and connect with your audience.
  3. Write
Write a book, contribute to an article, do it on your blog, respond to newspaper columns.  You’ll be noticed as someone who knows what they stand for.  For extra points, bring copies of your book with you when you speak and give them away.

You don’t need to be everywhere in your business.  Start small and work your way up.  It might take longer, but you’ll learn a lot in the process that will make you and your business more successful in the long run.

Brent Green – feedback on Thou Shall Prosper as well as my potential move to Wisconsin.  Check out episodes 60 and 58 for the 10 Commandment for Making Money.

Scott Priestley called to say I should do live coaching on the air.  What do you think? Any takers?

In anything you do in business you need to start out by defining these three things:

Goals, objectives, and then a strategy.

You’ll see the details I set up for Luna Flooring on their blog at coachradio.tv/luna.  Here’s the intro video from that page.  I wrote the script for them and they added a lot of personality.

Bottom line – make your contest simple and use everything you can to get the word out.

Jeff Kosola and I connected on twitter a few months ago.  He’s delivering pizzas to deliver his way out debt.

deliverawaydebt.com

@deliverawaydebt on twitter

Started with $101,000 in debt and they’re half way to getting debt.  He and his family will be debt free in April, 2011.

Jeff works for GM now but doesn’t care for it.  In 2007, he took a promotion and moved to China for a 3-year contract.  He didn’t like the job so after about 13 months they moved back and he got back into his old job.

Deliver Away DebtThey tried for 11 months to get out of debt before hiring my friend Chad Pennycuff to help them get out of debt.

Jeff might get into coaching as he’s not in love with his job at GM.

His blog is inspirational and people have commented that’s it’s moved them towards action.

Biggest mistake – over-committing to posting and not following through.

Best thing he’s done – helping people get off their butts and move towards action with his blog and twitter.

My Move to Wisconsin

Justin and Christine, Madison, WIWhen someone mentions they might move to Wisconsin, people take notice. I talked about a possible move for my family and I on Coach Radio this week and many of you chimed in.

We put a time limit of four days to make a decision. Why only four days for a major decision you ask?

Well, we don’t want to spend the rest of our lives trying to make a decision. By trying to make the perfect decision, we do the only imperfect thing, which is to not take any action at all.   By not deciding, we have decided.  I hope your life isn’t like that.

So, our decision is…no.

Actually, our short-term decision is no.  I think we will end up moving.  Schools are really important to us though, and we’re going back for another visit, this time to get a tour of some of the schools.  That’s going to be later this year however, so for now, we’re sitting tight.

It’s not keeping us up at night because a decision has been made.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments.  Keep them coming!

This is part two of a two-part series.  My guest is James Dibben and we’re talking about Daniel Lapin’s book, Thou Shall Prosper, and Ten Commandments for Making Money.  (Here’s Part 1)  James is also the host of the Blue Collar Business Podcast.

Jews constitute about 2.3% of the U.S. population.  That means an average year should show about nine Jews on the Forbes 400, a list of the 400 wealthiest American.

Depending on the year, there are normally between 60 and 100 Jews on the list.  We talk about those 10 Commandments in this episode (and episode #58).

Ten Commandments for Making Money, from Thou Shall Prosper

6. Learn to foretell the future
Learn from the experiences of others – Dan Miller, Dave Ramsey, Daniel Lapin.  All bounced back from financial ruin. Goal setting is seeing the future.

7. Know your money
What you do with your money is a window into your priorities.  Where is your money going? The pursuit of money is a pursuit of yourself.

8. Act rich: Give away 10 percent of your after tax income
Giving to charity jump starts wealth creation.  Charity focuses you outside of yourself.

9. Never retire
Integrate your vocation and your identity by thinking of life as a journey rather than a destination.  There is no word in the Bible for retire.  If you love what you do why would you ever want to retire?

10. Extend the network of your connectedness to many people
The secret of partnership power – befriend many people a rung or two above and below your financial level, then find ways to help them achieve their goals.  Showing you care for others will draw in new connections – In twitter if I see NO or very few @ replies or RT of other users’ content I won’t follow.
