The First Day of Kindergarten

school busOur neighborhood is on a year-round school calendar and today is my oldest daughter, Ava’s, first day of kindergarten.  She’s been looking forward to this day, literally, for four months.

Ava’s been telling us all the things she’s going to learn and do and can barely contain her excitement.  She woke up early this morning, ready to make her own lunch.

Ava took two years of preschool and ate it up.  She asks for homework constantly and I’m forced to print worksheets from the internet and compile them in a 2″ binder.  She worked through 90% of the last 50+ page set a few hours into our last road trip.

Desire to Learn

What I love about Ava is her desire to learn. Studies have shown the majority of college grads haven’t read a single non-fiction book since college.  It’s like we get comfortable in life and just stop learning and growing.  We stop achieving and switch to just getting by.

I find it odd that many people also hate their jobs.  Some even hate their lives.  If you’re in that boat, shouldn’t you be doing something about it?

I’m Doing Something About it

Me?  I read a book nearly every week.  Right now I’m reading Don Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and can’t put it down.  I take classes.  I subscribe to magazines.  I talk to people and hire coaches.  I never stop learning because I know I’d be going backwards.

I want to be like Ava.  I want an appetite for new things.  I want my life to be as exciting as a movie.  I want to star in my own reality TV show.  I know that my life won’t be exciting and full of learning unless I do something about it.

Are you doing something about it?

Ideas to Grow Your Business – #1: Install Analytics on Your Website

Google AnalyticsYou’ve probably figured out by now that I’m a big fan of using free and low-cost ideas to grow your business. Google analytics can help you grow your business by allowing you to dig into the details of your website.

There is a danger in digging into your stats too deeply however, and that’s because stats are rear facing.  It’s somewhat like driving while looking in the rear-view mirror.  It is comforting to check to make sure you did miss that dog, but it’s even more important to keep looking ahead and planning your next move.

Google analytics is a free service that is easy to install on nearly any website platform.  Once installed you’ll be able to see how many people visit your website, where they’re coming from, what they’re looking, how long they’re staying, and more.  These are important things to be looking at and constantly working to improve.

Jump right in to google analytics even if you don’t understand it.  Once it’s installed it will begin tracking and keep a record for you.  Remember not to live by your stats though.  They’re helpful metrics, but they’re not everything.

Derek mans the show from our studio while I broadcast live from the parking lot of McDonald’s in Sevierville, TN.

We share an update of our goal to increase our monthly listens from 1,000 in December, 2009 to 20,000 in December, 2010.

We’re now bringing on another person, initially to be a part-time Financial Coach.  Let us know if you’re interested.

Look for a two-day event at our offices where we’re taking just five coaches behind the scenes.  We’re even going to scholarship one person through at no charge.

Dr. West Conner is a medicine coach near Nashville, TN.  He’s a good example of finding your niche and owning.  West is a pharmacist who has some great ideas about helping people differently than he’s doing now. In his own words, he hates what he’s doing now.

West describes how a $12 medication changed his outlook on how he helps people.

ChefCraig wrote on the chat that West just saved his family $130 each month. That’s $1,560 each year.

West’s first book was in a 3-ring binder and 110 pages.

His biggest challenge is time.  He works full time and has a very active family.

West shares his experience of getting on TV as a local expert.
