Cliff Ravenscraft is a full time podcaster.  That’s right, he gets paid to talk about his life. He’s produced more than 2,000 episodes and 24 individual shows over the past few years.

“Find something that you love so much that you would do it for free and then find a way to make money doing it.” Cliff found this idea from Dan Miller’s 48 Days to the Work You Love.

He was an insurance agent with a stay-at-home mom as a wife.

Podcasting for two years before making the decision to go full time.  When he and his wife Stephanie decided to go full time they gave their company a 90 day notice.

Cliff’s biggest challenge: how to charge doing something he loves.

When he was growing his business on the side he put in 20 hours on average per week outside of his normal job.  Some weeks he worked an additional 40-60 hours per week.

Revenue streams:

  • subscribers to his podcasts ($10 / month)
  • sponsorships (a minimum of $800 / month)
  • consulting (building websites and helping others start their own podcasts)
  • equipment sales

Cliff had a board of advisers whom he could trust to provide feedback and motivation as he started and grew his business.

Derek joined me on an interview with John G. Miller this morning.

How do you tell clients the honest truth when they’re paying you?

Google search: dark side of Dave Ramsey

We talked about Tony and Alisa DiLorenzo’s interview and their story.

Remarkable – Doing something that gets talked about.

I asked Derek what he’s doing right now to find clients.  There’s not just one but Derek says speaking is his biggest form of marketing.  SAS is a big partner and Derek does a lot of free events on their campus.  He does a number of things that don’t pay him directly like hosting a radio show and frequent blogging.

Tony and Alisa DiLoreno are Marriage Coaches in San Diego, CA.

Tony popped an interesting question to his wife Alisa a few years back. Their marriage was on the rocks and he proposed 60 days of sex. Alisa said yes and it’s one factor that helped change their marriage for the better.

In July of 2009 they were invited to tell their story at a marriage retreat to which 40 couples showed up.  That’s how they first realized it was something they were passionate about.  (Get out of your comfort zone!)

Formula for their success

  • Get results
  • Be passionate
  • Get out of your comfort zone

After the first or second meeting I gave homework to them to write a book…and it’s almost done!

Andrew Krieman posted this quote in the chat: “Marriage is not a noun; it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get. It’s something you do. It’s the way you love your partner every day.” – Barbara De Angelis

Revenue streams:

  • Speaking
  • Book and product sales
  • Coaching

Tony and Alisa are working 20-30 hours per week to launch ONE.

How are they getting the word out?  Their podcast is a big promotion source for them.

They’re using all three suggestions I have to build content: written word, audio and video.

You can Screw up Blogging and Still be Successful

Annabel Candy shares how she wanted to grow her blog readership to 1,000 in just 12 months.  In her recent post she lays out four mistakes she made and how she still met with success.

My take on it is that she had perseverance.  Many start a blog for their business or to spread their ideas but give up at the three month point.  The majority have stopped publishing by six months.

If you don’t want to be successful then don’t start.  If you don’t plan to power through the dip then stay at home.

If you have what it takes then you’ll stick with it for nine to eighteen months and meet the payback.  Your business will increase, others will be spreading your ideas and success will only lead to more success.  That’s called a “virtuous cycle.”

You won’t get there if you stop after 16 posts.

What are your tips for sticking with it?
