Covered in today’s show:

- Adam Baker was brand new to the online world, but built a community quickly
- Recently he’s been making full time income from his website
- He and his family got radical about debt and have since lived in other parts of the world

coachradio-coverAdam Baker is brand new to the online world.  Two years ago he was building a property management company, but was very interested in entrepreneurship.  He had a brand new baby and he found himself sitting down with his wife, Courtney to talk about life.  There found themselves accumulating a lot of debt.

He sold his property management company and began getting radical in paying off their debt.  In the process he started manvsdebt.com with a goal of moving to Australia.

Man vs Debt

He and his wife, Courtney, moved with their brand new baby and ended up living in Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand.

Before they moved however, Baker launched his blog and began to find people to connect with.  Today he has over 8,300 subscribers to his website.

He grew his community by being genuine.  He wrote from his personal perspective, connected with A-list people, and most importantly, his readers.

I couldn’t take notes on the entire interview, but here are a few questions I asked Baker:

  • What about long vs. short posts?
  • How often to post?
  • How to grow a community?
  • How to monetize?
  • How to design a website?

Adam put out some great content here:

-Set a BIG, PASSIONATE goal and then immediately take steps to act on achieving it. ~I’m all for goal setting. But I typically don’t set BIG, PASSIONATE goals, I set small goals. Maybe they take me a few months, but I’ve never gone after the BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal) like Adam talked about. But it’s coming!
-Prioritize! ~ How true. I left a comment for Justin earlier today regarding some occurrences I’ve had with other people “wanting” to start a business, but unwilling to prioritize ANY effort into making it happen.
-Build genuine relationships with people. ~I’ve just got on Twitter in the last two weeks. And I’ve already noticed some folks ONLY push products or services and never throw out personal stuff. BUSINESS IS BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE! Great advice.
-I’m willing to bet you got, “Give a S%&#” from Gary Vaynerchuk. He says that FREQUENTLY. He’s a great example of someone who has a LOT of quality stuff to say, you just have to overlook his cussing.
-Outsource what you’re no good at and focus on work that comes from your strengths. ~That’s my plan! For instance, I have NO DESIRE to learn about websites. So I’m going to find someone else to do it. Maybe I can keep their books for a month in place of getting my site up and running. Maybe it can be ongoing, but I suck at computers and have no desire to learn, not going to spend time there then!
-I really like what you had to say about blogging frequency. You said you started with everyday blogging, but found that you didn’t have the time and your quality wasn’t up to your standards. So you adjusted to what fits your life. I took the opposite route. I started at twice a week. But I’ve quickly learned I have more to say. At posting just twice a week I had more than a month of posts written and stored for later. So I switched to 5 day a week. My thoughts are two fold. 1) I’m honing my skills, since I feel writing is not a skill of mine. and 2) I’m putting out more content. And I’ve been telling everyone I’ll keep up the 5 day a week posting schedule as long as I have time and the quality doesn’t suffer. So I COMPLETELY agree with your two big points!

Great interview, Justin! Adam, it was a pleasure to hear your story.

It’s amazing to see what Adam has done in the the few months since he’s been on the show.

Great notes here. Reminds me that I could probably be outsourcing more myself.
