I drove to Nashville with Christine to hang out with some friends and to meet new ones.  Dan Miller, author of 48 Days to the Work You Love, hosted Chris Guillebeau on his Art of Non Conformity book tour.  It’s a great book if you haven’t read it and Chris will be on Coach Radio soon.

Dan Miller - 48 Days PodcastI pointed out how Dan seems to be the continual student.  I’ve seen him each week over the past month, each time in a different state.  Next week we’ll be together in Colorado.  If you ever see Dan at a conference, the one thing I guarantee you’ll notice is him taking notes.

We each tend to spend a lot of time talking about getting from A to Z so I asked Dan what it takes to live the lifestyle you want to live.  It was enlightening and I know you’ll enjoy it.

Great podcast Justin and Dan! 1200 sqft and three kids? Wow! As always much to think about and apply.

Thanks for the compliment. We actually love our home, but it’s too small for an additional office.

Save Blue Like Jazz ended up with over $360,000 funded. I gave money and I haven’t even read the book. My reason? Steve Taylor’s music means a lot to me (yes, even today) and I wanted to support him.

But now I’m looking forward to the movie! :-)

I gave on the last day as well, Bill. I have no doubt the movie is going to rock!

I like Dan’s advice on how to justify going for more training when you’re starting a new business. Dan said you need to figure out unique ways of how you can help others so you can attend the event. He gave the suggestion of offering to sale their products, or setting up stuff for the event. I’ve heard this before, but it’s just a different way of looking at things then I’m used to.

Dan also said, “invest in where you’re going.” I love that. Business is always changing, therefore we need to plan on where we want to go with unforseen changes in the future. You do that by continually learning.

He also said if you’re just starting out you should have an education budget of at least $250 a month. I very much agree, but just need to figure out how I can do that.

And I’ve heard this before, but I like the idea of actually blocking off time on the calendar for reading every day. This will help you make sure you do and help you see it as a value adding activity in your business.

Dan also said don’t try to be well versed in every area of your business. Stay focused. Get others to work with you in the areas that are outside of your focus. I think this is great advice. For instance, I have NO DESIRE to learn how to make a website. I know I need one, but the thought of even attempting to learn how to make one makes me want to break my computer. So I’m going to give that piece to someone else who actually enjoys it and is good at it.

This seems to be a recurring theme also, “Where you do what you do matters.” I haven’t heard this as frequently as just DO IT! But I keep hearing this over and over and over. I think there’s validity to it. B/c I know I get energized by being outside. Yet at my last two day jobs I’ve not even had a window I can look out in the area in which I worked. One of the jobs, due to the number of hours worked, frequently the only time I’d see the sun was if I went out to lunch. Otherwise I got to work before the sun came up and went home after the sun went down. And the only people in the company with windows were “C” level people. I really felt myself getting depressed for lack of ever seeing outside there.

Great show. Two of the most influential people to me in this journey to self employment, what’s not to love about that?!?!

Keep listening, Ivan. You’ll hear, “Where you do, what you do, matters”, many more times.
