This is a short break from our normal Your Story episodes where I unpack what Story means to me.

And…I share a very big announcement that’s been affecting my business and family for the past few weeks.

A few notes from the show:

Story includes setting, conflict, climax, and resolution.

Don’t you want to look back 20 years from now and say you had the courage to do something few other people ever would?

Justin, can I tell you this was one of your best shows? I just did, didn’t I? I recently re-read Donald Miller’s book, A Million Miles…sounds like it may have played some small role in your thought process, too.

Kudos for asking these questions, and answering them. It’s that answering part that’s the hardest. Well done, sir.

Interesting topic as our family is considering a move from the U.S. to Australia or New Zealand. Like you, I have a business that can be done anywhere, as long as there’s an Internet connection.

Another aspect of moving is not just being too comfortable, which prevents you from taking action, but determining if a move is based on one’s current situation never being “enough.” I guess that would be the “grass is always greener on the other side” syndrome. (Or “on the other continent” in this case.)

I agree with your thoughts on setting a quick date. An extension of that might be setting another date 6 – 12 months down the road to re-evaluate that decision. That helps to get everybody in agreement that, once the initial decision is made, you can set it aside for X months and not second-guess yourself.

I think it’s going to come down to your real motive for wanting to move. Is it out of love, or is it out of fear? Are you moving to something, or are you escaping from something? There is nothing wrong with either decision, but it needs to be for the right reasons for both you and your family.

Absolutely Rebecca! Motives are very important to us.

Wow, thanks Randy! I’m glad you loved the show. I loved Don’s book and I’ll be in Portland next month to see him. I hope the show pushed people.

Wow, that’s a huge move Mike. Isn’t it cool to have a business you can do from anywhere?

I’m right with you in a further date for evaluation. We’re deciding by Friday, and then seeing what happens. If it’s “no” we’ll probably look at it a bit further down the road.

Well, first of all, yes you are crazy! But that’s what makes you so successful and likable! Secondly, I think you should go for it! That’s definitely a beautiful area. I’ve had lots of friends and relatives that have lived there and I’ve visited many a time. In fact, I’ve got a cousin that is getting ready to pack up and move back there with her husband since the private school she taught at has closed and her husband has taken a new position up there. They’ve always spent a significant amount of time up there every year anyway.

My personal preference is the other side of the “big lake”. When my wife retires from the fire dept. in a few years (at 43) we’re seriously considering moving back to Michigan along the western coastline of Lake Michigan. We just got back from our annual camping trip to there right before I kids start back into school.

And finally, you’ve given me a lot to think and pray about with your upcoming small group coaching. Gonna have to make some decisions. Limited money and unlimited awesome opportunities means some big decision making. I’ve also been considering the Speak it Forward conference and Dan Miller’s Coaching with Excellence. Whew. Decisions, decisions.

  • http://coachradio.tv/ Justin Lukasavige

Yes, I guess crazy can be a good thing! I like being a bit crazy at times. Keeps me fresh and on my toes.

There are a lot of programs out there like you mention. You’ve got three really good ones listed here and you wont’ go wrong on any of them. Dan’s will be very upper level. We’re going a lot deeper at coachU. Kent’s going very deep on speaking (and social media with me).

Again, you can’t go wrong on any of them. You just have to figure out what fits you best. Let me know if I can help.

I guess I’ll add to a variety of similar comments. Beth and I just made a huge decision…official separation papers are in. I will be officially discharged from the Air Force on 7 June 2011. Murfreesboro, TN is our planned future living place. Free agency here I come!
    Good luck with your decision!

You scared me Mark. I thought you guys were getting a divorce! How cool though, I’m so excited for you guys! How does it feel?

Looking at what I wrote, I guess using my jargon could cause some confusion. It feels like another waypoint on the journey, another step in the plan. It’s an exciting journey though!

    Make that 9 minutes…

It would nice to have an option to jump right to the point of your message…7 minutes into it and still waiting…

  • Elmo

Sorry…too painful…I thought waiting 13 minutes was generous. I suggest you say something important earlier…I’m outa here…

Personally, I really love the Your Story series. It gives me hope and determination to go forth, like so many of your guests, and SUCCEED. To fully become the man God designed me to be.

I like when you said, “Identify what you ant to do and DO IT! What’s stopping you? The “how”.” You’re so right. I’ve known for many, many years that I want to start my own business. I just couldn’t figure out 100% of the how. So I stopped in the dream phase. So many times. That’s why I think it’s time for me to plow a head and learn by doing. I’ll never know 100%. Even when I’m doing it. But at least I’ll be “screwing up” heading TOWARDS my goals.

I laughed when you talked about “comfortable misery”. I use the phrase “comfortable discomfort” for the same thing. And apparently I will stay until the “comfortable discomfort” turns into possible life threatening issues. I sometimes shake my head at how I’ve treated MYSELF in my life. I will be writing a different story going forward.

And I too love A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. Recommend it to all!

Getting caught in the “how” has thwarted many people, Ivan. Figure out where you want to be first, then determine how you’ll get there.
