This is part one of a two-part series.  My guest is James Dibben and we’re talking about Daniel Lapin’s book, Thou Shall Prosper, and Ten Commandments for Making Money. (Here’s Part 2)  James is also the host of the Blue Collar Business Podcast.

Jews constitute about 2.3% of the U.S. population.  That means an average year should show about nine Jews on the Forbes 400, a list of the 400 wealthiest American.

Depending on the year, there are normally between 60 and 100 Jews on the list.  We talk about those 10 Commandments in this episode (and episode #60).

Ten Commandments for Making Money, from Thou Shall Prosper

  1. Believe in the dignity and morality of business
Business has been villainized in the movies.
  2. Get to know yourself
Personal Accountability – You can only change yourself.
You can’t help others unless you start with yourself.
  3. Do not pursue perfection
Perfect doesn’t exist – what works for you might not work for me.
This whole chapter basically explains why we should keep Capitalism even though it isn’t perfect.
Equal opportunity but not equal results.
  4. Lead consistently and constantly
You can’t become a leader but you can lead.
You can’t declare yourself a leader and be one.  You have to back it up with action.
  5. Constantly change the changeable while steadfastly clinging to the unchangeable
Enjoy the change that necessary and hang on tight to what never changes.
Often, what’s unchangeable for you is the reason you started your business in the first place.  Don’t ever lose site of that.

Great show guys. Funny, I have been listening to “Lead the Field” the last few days and Mr. Nightingale talks about the fact that we should specify a certain amount of money we want to make. If we don't, it's just uncertain and vague.
I don't even have “Thou Shalt Proper” yet. I hear a lot of folks reference Mr. Lapen quite often. Guess I'll need to break down and go get it.

You bet Archie. Uncertainty and vagueness don't get you far in life.

Note on competition: competition legitimizes your industry. If you have no “competition” (meaning other people who play in your arena), you have no industry. Competition = familiarity = awareness = an easier sales process.

This show was very inspiring. I actually gained four blog topics from it.

    1. Justin, you’ve said this a few times now since the beginning of your show and it really hit home with me. “If you are not profitable in your business then you are letting a whole lot of people down.” B/c if you’re doing what God made you to do and you can’t do it b/c you’re not making money, people are missing out from what you have to benefit them with.
    2. I’ve mentioned this a lot in previous comments, but haven’t put it down as a future blog topic. The scarcity vs abundance mentality. For the vast majority of my life I’ve operated from the scarcity mentality. I’ve come to realize that hurts me and those I interact with b/c I’m keeping a piece of what I have to offer them back, b/c I’m scared someone will “take” it from me.
3.Who you surround your self with matters. I realized this years ago and actually cut off an entire group of friends b/c I realized that every time I was around them I’d be in a bad mood for days. Why? B/c any idea, hope, or dream I shared they would tear it apart. I think they had the crab mentality.
4.Justin, this is another reucurring theme / quote from you. Successful businesses know two things. A) how to implement and B) how to be consistent. I want to discuss this from the angle if you’re not implementing, you’ll NEVER start a business. That’s where I’ve been FOR YEARS! Now I’m finally starting to implement. And being consistent. Let’s see how this works after 6 months.

Great show. I need to look James up. I’ve heard you mention his podcast before. Sounds very interesting.

Andy and I just talked about this again on the No More Mondays show, Ivan. You’re right about letting people down. I just don’t understand how you can know and understand why you’re here on this earth and then not do anything with it.

  • Ivan Bickett

    Two things.

    1) Are the No More Mondays shows archived anywhere? I’d like to hear the one you just did.

    2) I think for the MAJORITY of people I don’t think they actually KNOW how they can help and the don’t know why they are here. Like I did, they thought, “I’m good at X, even though I don’t get any enjoyment out of it, so it must be what God designed me to do with my life.” Or they say, “I want to do XYZ, but there’s no degree in college I can get with that. Therefore, it most not be a legitimate field for me to try and support myself or my family.” Both of these are examples from my own life.

For me, it wasn’t until I joined FAA and started working through the courses that I realized, for the first time in my life, just b/c I’m good at it doesn’t mean that’s what I should do with my life. Honestly, I’m STILL not certain that my idea of A Better Way of Business is what I’m designed to do. But I’m SUPER excited and have tons of ideas on how to help small business owners. I believe by ACTUALLY DOING something I will be refined by the fires and come out on the other side knowing what I have to offer and why I’ve been put on this earth. AND I CAN’T WAIT TO PUSH AHEAD!

Of course, Ivan. They’re both in iTunes as well as http://www.48days.net/page/no-more-mondays-show.

I can’t wait to see you make this happen, Ivan!
