Derek Sisterhen joins me on the First Wednesday of every month to talk more about the specifics of our business and coaching in general.  I’m actually broadcasting from my bedroom, with a case of the…well, you can just listen if you want the details.

We had a great discussion about what your clothing means to your prospects. We discussed whether we may be losing clients because of the way we dress, and if that’s really a bad thing.

Justin Hughes asks, “do you come across clients that you really want to work with that turn you down?”

Over the past two weeks we brought on Jaime Thompson as a Financial Coach and Jory Butler as a Career Coach.  We’ll be introducing them to you over the next few months.  It’s interesting to work with other people, especially if they’re out of state, so we talked through the challenges and triumphs.

Gmail has become my friend lately and I’ll be releasing a tutorial showing you how I’m using is as my universal inbox. I’ve been loving it.

CoachU is now live! You can’t register for a few more weeks, but the details are all posted now at coachradio.tv/coachu.

I’ve admitted to a client that I was on Skype with them in my martial arts uniform. THOSE are the best clients you could ask for :)

Too funny. I actually talked to a prospect a few weeks ago and told him I
was in my bedroom. That was unusual, but he loved it and now we’re working
    together.

    Yet another great show.

    Here’s my take-aways:

“Be real. If it scares people away that’s ok.” You said this in relation to how you dress. But I love it as general advice even beyond the dress. Although I’m planning on wearing blue jeans and button ups, but that’s what I wear on most weekends, unless it’s hot. For years now though I do my best to be me. Even when I was looking for a traditional job, I showed them who I was. B/c if you don’t like who I am, I don’t want to work for you or with you b/c I’m AWFUL at covering up who I am.

I love this quote from Derek: I can help just about anybody. But NOT just about anybody is ready to help themselves. This is a great lesson. I learned this in college. I had some friends who would come to me with issues and I would pour myself into helping them resolve the issues. Only to find out they really just wanted someone to listen to them complain b/c they were COMPLETELY unwilling to make an effort on their part. It used to tear me up. But I learned. If I care more about a problem than the person in the problem there isn’t much I can do at all. I’ll offer advice when asked, but after that I’m done. And until they act on the advice I’ve offered (or advice someone else offered that could also solve the issue) I won’t talk about it again.

Along the same thread, but further near the end, Derek went on to say you need to realize when your client is not ready to work with you. But then you need to figure out how to keep them in your loop so they think of you first once they are ready to work with you. He mentioned using a newsletter or a blog for it. I really like this. B/c I know my tendency would be, “You’re not ready to work with me? Well move along. NEXT!” But Derek’s suggestion is more like, “You’re not willing to work with me? Well why don’t you take this free information I’m putting out and when you are ready, give me a call.” Derek’s method is so much better than mine. I LIKE IT!

Great points here, Ivan. First, you need to repel people if you want to attract others. Kevin Miller and I talked about that on a recent Free Agent Academy class (http://faatrial.com).

Then you hit on another great point. Just because someone isn’t ready to work one-on-one with you now, doesn’t mean you can’t help them with free info. Then, when they’re ready, they’ll likely come back. We see this time and time again.
