John Jantsch is the author of Duct Tape Marketing, and the new book, The Referral Engine. John joins me to talk about teaching your business to market itself through referrals.

Can you share the premise of your book?

How do you get people talking about you?

What do you think about advertising?

How do you combine old fashioned referrals with social media?  Combining high-tech with high-touch.

Can you get referrals from people who haven’t worked with you?

What kind of people do you want talking about you?

How do you treat people who refer business to you?

How do you ask for referrals?  It can seem kind of sleazy.

John Jantsch Quotes

“#1 way to generate referrals is to be more referable.  Have a great customer experience.”

“You need to educate your referral base how to talk about you.”

“Put tools in the hands of your referrers to make it easy to refer you.”

“Your job is to improve the lives of your customers.”

I'm hardcore on the RSS feeds now. After you find enough blogs you like, jumping around to all those sites to see if anything is new is a ridiculous waste of time.

First I started using the RSS reader in Apple Mail to bring feed updates into my mail program because a lot of my time is spent there.

But I now also use NewsRack on my iPad and casually check it out as I'm relaxing on the recliner at the end of the day. (That's the second time I've mentioned NewsRack today. I'm should start billing them for that.)

It's kind of nice to read blogs in that setting because I'm away from my desktop computer where e-mail, Twitter streams and everything else are tempting distractions.

Me too Mike. I use Reeder on the iPad and I'm absolutely in love. I probably use that more than anything, other than the Kindle app, on the iPad.

Ha! I'm finding that I enjoy my Kindle books more on my iPad, too. The Kindle itself sits lonely in my office wondering how I could have tossed it aside for something new.

Amazon still has the best selection in my mind. But it's more of joy to read the books on the iPad.

I actually preferred reading on the Kindle, hands down. But I didn't want to keep both of them around. I read a book each week, but it's not quite enough to keep the Kindle around.
